이상일의 한의원 영어- “English of, for and by 한의사” (37)Long time, no see, everyone!! Due to honeymoon trip, I’ve been away for a few weeks. Sorry to those who might have waited for new articles. Actually, the last article of the series will be the 40th, so I got 4 more to go. I’ll do my best to share useful expressions with you.
This week, I’ll talk about balding which is becoming a major concern among men in their 30s and 40s. Of course, Korean Medicine has a solution for those who are worried about thinning hair. Let’s learn about how to talk about hair loss this week.
Dr.Lee: (Knock knock) Come on in.
Hamilton: Hello! Nice to meet you, Dr.Lee.
Dr.Lee: Nice to meet you too, Hamilton. What brings you here today?
Hamilton: As you can see, my hair is falling out. It’s gotten worse over the past a few years.
Dr.Lee: Let me see. Anyone in your family suffer from baldness?
Hamilton: My grandfather did but his hair loss began when he was over 60 years old. Other than him, there’s no one else.
Dr.Lee: Have you been under a lot of stress lately?
Hamilton: Hmm… I would say… yes to this question. In fact, my boss is such an asshole! Only thing he’s good at is telling me to do is work after 6 pm for no reason. He never allows me to clock out on time. I don’t wanna sacrifice myself for this shitty company for such a small salary but my wife won’t let me quit this job.
Dr.Lee: Calm down. I’m really sorry to hear your story but life has to go on. Let’s talk about the state of your body. Do you sweat a lot?
Hamilton: Yes. I only sweat on my face and head, especially when I eat spicy food. I’m sometimes soaked with sweat.
Dr.Lee: Do you feel hot flashes? I mean, sudden feelings of heat intensely over your face.
Hamilton: Sometimes I do. My face becomes red very often.
Dr.Lee: How is your urination? Is it dribbling at the end? Do you have to try hard to start urination? Do you feel the urge to urinate within 30 minutes after urination?
Hamilton: My urine stream has gotten a little weaker compared to last year. I see it dribble at the end as well.
Dr.Lee: All right. How are your bowel movements?
Hamilton: I go to the bathroom 2~3 times a day and it’s usually watery.
Dr.Lee: Do you feel thirsty and drink water often?
Hamilton: Yes. I enjoy drinking cold water all the time. But when I drink cold beer, it normally gives me stomach ache and the runs.
Dr.Lee: I’ll deduce* that you have trouble falling asleep.
*deduce: 생각해내다, 추론하다
Hamilton: Yes! And lots of dreams every night.
Dr.Lee: Let me see your tongue, and feel your pulse and abdomen. (진찰 후) More than 95% of hair thinning in men is male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenic alopecia*. Male pattern hair loss is characterized by hair receding from the lateral sides of the forehead, known as a “receding hairline” or a thinning crown. Both become more pronounced until they eventually meet, leaving a horseshoe-shaped ring of hair around the back of the head. Just like plants growing in soil, your hair needs proper temperature, humidity, ventilation and nutrition. A combination of those conditions keep your hair in place and healty. However, stress, irregular lifestyle, bad dietary habits, drinking, smoking… whatsoever that could destroy the balance of those conditions may bring about hair loss. It’s really important to receive appropriate treatment before the symptoms get worse but also you should practice self-control if you want to live a healthier life. It’ll be a pretty long journey to fix your problem but if you try hard to make yourself fitter, in combination with the herbal medicine, your hair loss will show considerable improvement.
