안녕하세요! 어느덧 한의원영어가 20회가 되었습니다. 매번 쓰면서 어떤 내용으로 채워가야할까 고민하는 게 이젠 일상이 되어가는 것 같습니다. 얼마나 많은 분들이 이 코너를 보시는지는 모르겠지만 오늘도 한 분이라도 더 배워가시길 바라는 마음으로 글을 씁니다. 이번 편에선 해수에 대해서 다뤄보고자 합니다.
Dr.Lee: Nice to meet you, William. What’s the matter?
William: Nice to meet you, too, Dr.Lee. I’ve been coughing for about a month. I went to see an ENT doctor and have been taking medicine since then, but it doesn’t get better at all.
Dr.Lee: When is it the worst? Do you cough when you sleep?
William: I cough all day long except when I sleep.
Dr.Lee: What is your cough like? Is it shallow like clearing your throat or deep as if it comes from your belly?
William: It’s deep. I started feeling chest pain a week ago too.
Dr.Lee: Sounds pretty bad. Do you have a lot of phlegm?
*phlegm: 가래, 담
William: Yes. I hear a growling sound when I cough.
Dr.Lee: What’s the color of your phlegm?
William: White, sometimes yellow.
Dr.Lee: Let me check your body temperature. Hmm... It’s normal. Do you have any other symptoms like runny nose, night fever, acid reflux or indigestion?
William: Nothing else.
Dr.Lee: Alright. let me check your pulse and tongue. (설진 맥진 후) Lie down on your back. I will examine your abdomen. (복진 후) Okay I’m all done.
William: What seems to be the cause?
Dr.Lee: This type of cough can be categorized as a ‘dam-eum cough’
William: What is ‘dam-eum’?
Dr.Lee: Simply put, it’s pathological phenomena that arises due to disordered fluid metabolism in our body, which slows down the flow of qi(氣) and blocks the meridian pathways. It can cause coughs along with white or yellow phlegm due to lowered lung, spleen, and kidney function. When I refer to these organs, please keep in mind that they are not identical to anatomical organs but rather a functional concept loosely tied to anatomical assumptions.
William: I see. Am I gonna get some medicine?
Dr.Lee: Yes. I’ll give you some medicine.
William: Thank you doctor.
